The city of Adelaide is in the south of Australia and it’s one of the most liveable cities in this part of the world. With a population exceeding 1 million people, Adelaide is an international hub that attracts students from all over the world. It’s also great for international professionals who are looking to work abroad and get some international experience.

Why should you live in the Adelaide city?

The city of Adelaide offers affordable living, good quality education, easy access to other parts in Australia and beyond, safety (it’s one of the safest cities in both Australia and Asia), multiculturalism among its locals but most importantly it has everything people need to live comfortably: jobs opportunities; beach; cafes lifestyle. You have plenty of choice on where to go out or hang out with friends, what sport activity can be done, international cuisine and culture.

In other words: it’s a really good place to study!

You should also know that Adelaide is one of the first cities in Australia to offer free Wi-Fi internet for all citizens – so no more data roaming bills or feeling bored when you are abroad.

It might seem like an obvious choice but if you’re used to living within your own country then we recommend going through our list of reasons.

Study opportunities

Adelaide offers an incredible range of educational opportunities at numerous universities with courses ranging from business to Engineering or Information Technology. The city is also famous for its great produce, due to the Mediterranean climate. This makes it an ideal destination for international students who would like to study and work in a place with many opportunities.

How much does it cost to live there?

Living costs are comparable to any other major international capital city – though Adelaide has lower living expenses than most Australian cities. A good way to save money when studying abroad in Adelaide is by finding accommodation close-by on campus or near public transport hubs that offer affordable rates.

The best places include North Terrace (where the University of South Australia’s main campus is), the CBD (Central Business District) and North Adelaide.

How to find accommodation?

The best places for international students looking for long-term housing are in North Terrace, where the University of South Australia’s main campus is located; on or near public transport hubs that offer affordable rates such as in North Adelaide; or close to your workplace if you’re a working international student!

Employment opportunities

Employment opportunities can be found at numerous international companies with global headquarters situated just outside of town, including ExxonMobil, BHP Billiton and Woolworths. Alternatively, there are also plenty of jobs available through recruitment agencies like Hudson Robinson Partners who have offices all over Adelaide ready to help international professionals adapt into this new city and find international jobs.

Best places to visit when you are not working or studying - including festivals, beaches and restaurants!

Adelaide is a city of many cultures with multiculturalism being one its core values. This diversity can be felt throughout the streets with an eclectic range of food options for international students from all over the world: Lebanese, Middle Eastern, Asian cuisine within walking distance.

There’s also a great nightlife scene in town where internationals can try out Aussie pubs like James Boags Premium Ale House that serve up local brews as well as international beers such as Guinness on tap! You should also check out some famous Australian brands if you get the chance that sell quality goods at affordable prices.

Best place to visit in Adelaide.

  • Mount Lofty House, a restored 19th Century mansion set amidst magnificent gardens overlooking the city.
  • Botanic Gardens (the largest botanical garden in Australia) with acres of landscaped walks, lakes and waterfalls to explore by foot or bicycle. And that’s not all! There are also specialized museums such as science centres for children, planetariums, art galleries… The list goes on! Access and Navigation

Why can’t I log in?

There could be many reasons but the most probable is you have simply forgotten your password, are trying the wrong one or are entering it incorrectly. Some other things to think about include:

  • Does your username or password contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters? It should be entered exactly
  • Are cookies enabled on your browser

How do I gain access to a course?

Locate or search for the desired course (you can click ‘All courses…’ in the ‘My courses’ block) and click on the course name. If your teacher has given you an enrollment key, enter it when prompted, and click Enroll me in this course. Once you are enrolled in a course, it will appear under “My courses” any time that your are logged into that Moodle site.

How do I jump between my courses?

  • ‘My Courses’ block if it has been added to the page you are on ● Go back to the homepage (see below) and then use the main course block (if it has been added!)

How do I get back to the homepage?

Use the navigation bar at the top left of the page or the button at the very bottom of the course

How do I find course X?

If you are not already enrolled in a course you can search for it by name and description.

Course content

Where have all of the weeks/topics gone?

You have probably clicked on the icon. To reveal all of the other weeks/topics you need to click on the icon which you will see in the right margin of the week/topic. You can also use the dropdown box underneath the displayed week/topic to jump to a hidden section

Emails and forums

Why am I not getting any e-mails and others are?

Chances are your email address in your profile is either wrong or disabled. It could also be that you are not subscribed to the forums that are generating emails. AOL users may also not receive e-mails if the administrator has banned the use of AOL email addresses.

How can I stop all of these e-mails?

E-mails are an essential part of the way Moodle works. They are used to keep you up to date with what is going on. If you wish to reduce the amount of emails you get you could:

  • Edit your profile and change your e-mail settings to digest
  • Unsubscribe from non-essential forums (although they are there for a reason!)
  • Disable your e-mail address in your profile although this is not recommended and may go against in house rules.

Assignments and grades

Why is there no upload box?

This is either because:

  • The assignment has now closed
  • The assignment is not yet open
  • You already uploaded something and the settings prevent resubmissions

How can I see my recent assignment feedback?

There are many ways you can access their feedback. The most common method is by simply going to the same place where you uploaded the work. Another common method is to follow the link in the recent activity block (if the teacher has included it on the course). Another method would be to access the grade book and then follow

the link for the required assignment. Depending upon how the assignment was set up, you may receive an email when it has been marked with a direct link to the feedback.

Why is my course average so low?

Don’t panic! The Moodle gradebook takes into account unmarked and unsubmitted work. In other words, you start with zero and as you progress through the course and complete graded activities the percentage will steadily rise

Quizzes

Which button do I press when I have finished a quiz?

That depends upon what you want to do…

Why am I getting zero grade on my quiz?

You might exceed the quiz time limit.

This should never happen, because the count-down timer should submit the quiz automatically when time expires, and then the Moodle server should process you submission promptly. However, if the server is overloaded and running slowly, your responses may not be processed until after to ‘too late’ cut-off time, and so you will not receive marks for those questions.

How to submit an assignment

A Moodle assignment activity is where your instructor records your grade and provides feedback on your work. Sometimes a Moodle assignment activity is just to remind you about an assignment that is submitted in person, and for these assignments, the feedback may or may not be received through the Moodle assignment activity.

To find your assignments you can either browse the course for the assignment icon or you can navigate to the Activities block on the right side of the course and click on Assignments to see a list of all assignments in the course.

This list of assignments displays what unit the assignment is in, the assignment name, due date, submission status, and if it has been graded, the assignment grade. To see the assignment description, click on the assignment name.

To submit your assignment, navigate to the assignment activity and click the Add submission button.

You will either make a File submission, such as a Word document or type text into the Online text submission area. The assignment description will usually indicate what is required, but file submissions are much more common. To upload a file, simply drag and drop the file into the File submission area. Alternatively, you can click on the Add new file button, click Choose File, navigate to the file and select it, click the Open button, and click the Upload this file button.

If it’s an online text submission enter the text into the Online text submission box.

Once you have finished either uploading a file or adding online text, click the Save changes button.

Depending on the assignment settings, you may be able to edit your submission. Note that clicking the Save changes button updates the date and time stamp for the submission, so only click this button if you are either making your original submission or are making changes to your submission. Clicking the Save changes button after an assignment’s due date, whether or not you changed anything, will make the assignment appear late.

How students take a quiz

  • Click on the quiz link on the course homepage and read the information to check you’re on the right quiz.

○ A wrong answer is shown with the bottom half red

○ An essay question (requiring manual marking) is shown with the bottom half grey

○ A flagged question is shown with a red triangle at the top right

  • In the questions themselves, correct answers will be in green with a checkmark next to it. Incorrect answers will be in red with a cross next to them.
  • According to your teacher’s settings, you might get general feedback, specific feedback on each question and/or overall feedback on your final score.
  • Although the quiz may have been split into multiple pages, the review will show all the questions on a single page to make it easier to navigate. You can choose to review the quiz with separate pages as it was when you took the quiz.

Results in a quiz using CBM (Certainty-based marking)

Quizzes using CBM provides detailed feedback relating to accuracy and certainty:

Saving questions and returning later to a quiz

  • If you answer a number of questions and then want to complete the quiz at a later time, click “Finish attempt”.
  • When you return to continue the quiz, Moodle will remember which page you were on and allow you to continue from there, having saved your previous questions.

Retaking a quiz

If your teacher has allowed multiple attempts, when you click on the quiz again you will be informed how many attempts you have remaining along with your previous scores.
